A unique specialized service for seniors and their families was outlined at the May meeting of the Greater Bay of Quinte Chapter of CARP (Canadian Association for Retired Persons) Tuesday afternoon. The presenter was Jennifer Aronson, founder of the service and a highly qualified and experienced person in both the health and social services fields. Her company is Aronson Eldercare Consulting.

She stressed that many problems arise from the impact of change, too much and too fast for many seniors to cope with. As she reviewed some case histories (using made up names) it led to several in the large audience thinking that the message should be shared with younger people who are often the ones shoving such change on their loved ones.

Aronson contended that slowing down, taking time to do things little by little and maintaining respect are the way to deal with such problems. Her qualifications include dealing with both federal and provincial governments and their agencies plus legal matters like powers of attorney.

Other issues include the fact that all special services seniors need – health care, safe shelter, home care etc are all over-stressed and have waiting lists. People like those involved in CARP can help by keeping pressure on senior governments to upgrade such services.

Her own services are eldercare assessments, care planning, health system navigation, advocacy at medical appointments, family caregiver support, crisis planning and intervention, long term care navigation, and elder abuse intervention.

Aronson offers a “free 15-minute consultation” and a contact telephone number of 416 520-0987. Her slogan is: “helping you navigate the journey of aging. “

At the usual question and comment period at the close, several present stressed the need for the younger generations to be involved in such concerns and be aware of the services.
